In this course, you will learn about the law on parental rights as it relates to accessing, inspecting, amending, and destroying educational records. You will also learn about confidentiality and the required forms that must be signed prior to sharing personal information about a student to third parties.

About This Course

We’ve all filled out an online form, submitted an application or applied for a job using technology. But how do we know our personal information is safe? How can schools ensure the plethora of information they collect on every student is secure? One way schools are held accountable for warehousing all this information is through FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and ensure that all parties understand parental rights to access to their children's educational records and to protect their privacy rights by limiting access to these records without obtaining prior parental consent. FERPA addresses: access to educational records, parental right to inspect and review records, amendment of records and destruction of records.

*In order to apply for a CEU or a PD Unit, teachers have to complete all 7 courses in this series: SE501, SE502, SE503, SE504, SE505, SE506, SE507.
