Co-Teaching: Special Education Differentiation

This course is intended to guide and enhance special education and general education teachers understanding of co-teaching as a special education service delivery in the core classroom across all grade levels. The course offers clear and concise information, resources, and practical tools to considering co-teaching as a model of instructional delivery, and an opportunity to provide highly scaffolded differentiation of the core in the inclusive setting.


About This Course

Throughout this course, special education and general education teachers considering co-teaching and those already involved in co-teaching will learn about the rationale, purpose, benefits, and components of effective co- teaching practices as well as strategies for co-planning, lesson design and the development of strong co-teaching partnerships.

Participants are provided a comprehensive array of learning opportunities through reading articles on empirical research, watching videos of co-teachers in action and self-reflection on current pedagogical practices to enhance understanding, application, and essential elements of co-teaching. Participants are encouraged to actively discuss, share, and engage in online collaborative spaces and to explore the resources provided for further in-depth learning.

Silvia Lenhof DeRuvo has been committed to equity in education for students with disabilities throughout her career. She is currently a Senior Program Associate at WestEd’s Learning Innovations Program providing technical assistance to states through the IDEA Data Center (IDC) and the National Center for Systemic Improvement (NCSI) supporting state education agencies in their efforts to improve educational outcomes for all students with a focus on students with disabilities. She has an MA in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Fresno and has also been an adjunct instructor for the credential programs at California State University, Sacramento, the San Joaquin County Office of Education, and the Northern California Project Pipeline. She has also been a national speaker for the Bureau of Education and Research on Standards-based IEPs and RTI implementation processes.
